Assumes responsibility for receiving and determining acceptability of all specimens received in the Department of Pathology, preparing specimens according to designated protocol for each laboratory procedure and engages in computer activity for the Laboratory Information System and the Hospital Information System.  Obtains blood and non-blood specimens from inpatients/outpatients by venipuncture from the arm and/or microcollections from fingers or infant’s heel in a variety of collection tubes or capillaries, some of which contain preservatives or anticoagulants.  Assumes responsibility for actively contributing to section productivity and cost effectiveness.  Assumes responsibility for recognizing situations that require referral to Technical Supervisor, Chief of Section of Chairman of Department.  Performs additional tasks as requested by Chairman of Pathology or his/her designee.

High school graduate with one year of training in a medical assisting program.
